The trek commences with a gentle ascent from Munsyari, but progressively becomes more arduous upon reaching Bugdiyar. The trail passes through expansive meadows, deep valleys, ancient villages, gorges and high altitude glaciers. It also follows an ancient trade route, traverses moraine fields and dense forests while providing splendid vistas at every turn.
The path to the Nanda Devi East camp is truly awe-inspiring and when combined with its historical significance it undoubtedly ranks as one of India’s best treks. This particular region of Nanda Devi has long drawn climbers and mountaineers, many clandestinely seeking to summit Nanda Devi Peak. • Hike through the abandoned villages surrounding Munsiyari and Milam.
• Throughout the journey, you will be treated to magnificent views of neighboring mountains such as Nanda Devi (7,816m), Trishul (7,074m), Panch Chuli peaks, and Nanda Kot (6,861m).
• While trekking, there is a remote possibility of encountering Himalayan species like black bear, leopard, Himalayan Thar, Bharal, and snow leopard as well as a diverse range of birdlife.
• This 17-day expedition follows ancient trade routes from Tibet through the Indian Himalayas.
The optimal time for this trekking excursion is from March middle to June middle and from September middle to October middle.
Summer: The climate stays agreeable, hence, the ideal time to embark on a trekking adventure.
Monsoon: Amid the monsoon season, the region is off-limits due to a heightened risk of landslides and flooding. The roads become slick, hence it may not be an ideal time for trekking.
Winter: The temperature drops significantly below zero, thus making it challenging for trekkers to embark on their journey and roads are also inaccessible due to heavy snowfall.
Surrounded by the Rishi Ganga Valley to the west and the Gori Ganga Valley to the east, Nanda Devi is esteemed as the second highest peak in India and the highest in Uttarakhand. The colossal Nanda Devi comprises two peaks, forming a high ridge that stretches for 2 km on its eastern and western sides. The summit on the eastern side, which is comparatively lower in height than its counterpart on the western side, is named Sunanda Devi, formerly known as Nanda Devi East.
Board the air-conditioned train from New Delhi railway station at 06:00 hrs for Kathgodam in the morning. The train is expected to arrive at Kathgodam by 11:20 hrs. Upon reaching, our guide will be there to meet you and then take you by road to Almora. You will reach Almora by late afternoon and check into the hotel. In the evening, take some time to explore the area, have dinner and stay overnight at the hotel.
Following breakfast, embark on a drive to Munsiyari. During the journey to Munsyari, you will encounter local villages, several waterfalls, rivers, forests and more. Upon reaching Munsiyari, check into the hotel for an overnight stay.
Commencing on the initial day, your trekking journey will commence from Munsyari and continue till Lilam through Barkot. From Barkot, you will initiate a descent of 2 km towards the bridge that crosses the Gori Ganga at a location known as Jimighat. Take some time to explore the area before trekking back uphill to Lilam. Set up your tent in Lilam for an overnight stay and enjoy dinner.
Right after breakfast, you will commence your trek to Bugdiar. The trails then continue along the right side of the valley, above the swift-flowing Gori Ganga. After a while, you will enter a gorge. From there, you will descend to Garam Pani, famous for its sulphur bath. Next, a sequence of switchbacks through conifer and oak forests awaits as the path winds its way for 4 to 5 km until reaching the Bugdiyar settlement. Spend the night in a tent at Bugdiyar.
Begin your day with a hearty breakfast and head towards Martoli. On this day, you will track alongside the Gori Ganga River until you arrive at a Hindu temple, Bugdiar. After trekking 4 km, you will begin to encounter meadows that lead to Laspadhura or Laspa pass. Following a short break, prepare for a challenging ascent of 6 to7 km over level stones to reach the grassy plateau of Martoli. Set up your tent in Martoli for an overnight stay and dinner.
With today’s trek, you will arrive at the most significant landmark, Milam village. On the sixth day, you will traverse the bridges over Lwan Gad and Gori Ganga to get to Burphu Village (335 M). Your next stop will be Milam village.
Wake up early in the morning and set off for Milam Glacier. On the seventh day, the path will be demanding but the sight of the scenery will be fulfilling. From the glacier, you can enjoy a clear view of Rishi Parvat (669 M), Trishul (707 M) and Hardeol (715 M). Take some time to explore the stunning surroundings on the glacier and then hike back to your camp in Milam village.
Today, you can relax and discover the magnificent scenery of the Milam area. Spend the night in the camp and enjoy dinner.
Start the day with a morning meal and take a stroll around the stunning surroundings of the area before embarking on a downhill hike to Lwani. Spend the night at Lwani camp.
Start your day with a tasty breakfast and set off on a trek to the foot of Nanda Devi East Base Camp. This specific route is popular among hikers, as it takes you through a series of moraine fields and expansive meadows of Sartol Kharak (365 M) before reaching the base camp, Naspanpatti. Upon reaching Naspanpatti, you will set up your tent, explore the area, and enjoy a delightful dinner.
Finally, the long-awaited day has arrived. Today, you will embark on a trek towards Nanda Devi East. Discover the area and hike back to the base camp. Enjoy dinner and spend the night in the camp.
After hiking for 4-5 hours, you will arrive at Nanda Devi East. Take some time to explore Nanda Devi East Base Camp before returning to the base camp. Enjoy dinner and stay overnight in the base camp.
Following an early breakfast, descend to Bugdiar via Railkot. Spend the night in tents.
Today, you will hike back to Lilam and set up your tent for an overnight stay.
On the final day of the trek, you will hike downhill to Munsyari. Once you arrive in Munsyari, you will be taken to a hotel for an overnight stay, followed by a dinner.
At the break of dawn, you will depart from the campsite and drive back to Kathgodam to catch the Ranikhet Express, which will transport you to Delhi. It will be an overnight journey.
After you reach Delhi, the Nanda devi east base camp trekking adventure concludes.
