The Holy River Ganges is the most revered river as per Hindu beliefs. Gaumukh (Cow’s mouth), the point of origin of the Ganges, is therefore considered one of the holiest places for Hindu devotees. The water that flows in Gangotri is regarded as the purest for religious rituals. The trek takes travelers to the Gaumukh Glacier, believed to be the starting point of the Ganga River.
The Gaumukh Trek entails 12 days of hiking in the magnificent Garhwal Himalayan Ranges. Gangotri, situated at an elevation of 3159m (10365 feet), boasts a breathtaking location where Kedar ravine and sacred Bhagirathi River meet. The route passes through lush forests and beautiful meadows. The region houses several significant Hindu pilgrimage sites. The ideal months for trekking in Gangotri are May, June, and then September to October.

Best Time to Visit

Best time to visit Gomukh Tapovan is in summers (May – June) and Post monsoon (September – October).

In summers: The climate of Gangotri stays pleasant during summers. The Himalayan range is distinctly visible. It is recommended to bring warm clothing.

In monsoons: The lushness of Gomukh Tapovan invites visitors to immerse themselves in the wild beauty of nature. Take pleasure in gazing at the snow covered peaks at Tapovan. There is a possibility of road closures for a few hours due to landslides, but the scenic splendor of Gomukh Tapovan during monsoons makes it worth the risk. It is recommended to bring raincoats.

After monsoon: The area gets covered in snow during the winter season and the choices for accommodation are also limited. However, Gomukh and Tapovan look exceptionally beautiful during winters, although the trek becomes more challenging. It is recommended to bring warm and heavy clothing.

Where is the Gomukh Tapovan Trek?

Gangotri is located at an elevation of 3,048 meters above sea level in the Uttarkashi District of Uttarakhand state. Gaumukh is positioned approximately 18 kilometers from Gangotri, while Tapovan is situated at a distance of 9 kilometers from Gaumukh.

Itinerary

Day 1 : Delhi – Haridwar – Rishikesh

In the morning, board an air-conditioned train for Haridwar at 06:50 hours. Upon reaching Haridwar, meet our guide who will assist you in reaching Rishikesh and checking into your hotel. You have free time in the evening for recreational activities. Spend the night at the hotel.

Day 2 : Rishikesh - Uttarkashi (170 kms/ 4-5 hrs)

After breakfast, we will embark on a 7-8 hour drive to Uttarkashi. Upon reaching Uttarkashi, you will be taken to the hotel that has been pre-booked for you. The evening is set aside for exploring local attractions. Dinner and overnight accommodation will be at the hotel.

Day 3 : Uttarkashi - Gangotri (3048 m/ 10,000 ft) Drive (95 kms)

This morning, we will head to Gangotri via Harsil (approximately 25 km). Upon arrival, we will check in to the hotel for an overnight stay.

Day 4 : Gangotri - Bhojwassa (3792 mts/12440 ft) 13 kms trek/5-6 hrs)

After enjoying breakfast, we will continue our journey to Bhojwassa through Chirbasa. We will trek alongside the powerful Bhagirathi River until we reach Chirbasa. From there, we will trek through a dense forest to reach Bhojwassa. Once we arrive at Bhojwassa, we will set up our camp by the riverside. The afternoon is free for exploring the surroundings and witnessing the sunset over the majestic Bhagirathi peaks. Dinner and overnight accommodation will be in tents.

Day 5 : Bhojwassa - Gomukh (3890 mts/12760 ft) - Tapovan (4463 mts / 14640 ft)

Today, following breakfast, we will continue our journey to Gomukh (389mt), the origin of the Ganges. After exploring Gomukh, we will proceed towards Tapovan. Tapovan is a vast meadow that is embellished with streams and blooming wildflowers. It is common to spot herds of Bharal (blue mountain goats) along the mountain slopes from here. Dinner and overnight accommodation will be provided at the campsite.

Day 6 : Tapovan (4463 mts / 14640 ft)

The day will be reserved for leisure. Take the opportunity to discover the Kirti & Meru Glacier. Dinner and overnight accommodation will be arranged at the campsite.

Day 7 : Tapovan - Bhojwassa (Trek 4-5 hrs)

In the early morning, take pleasure in the sunrise over the tall peaks. Following breakfast, trek down to Bhojwassa. Once at Bhojwassa, set up camp for dinner and overnight lodging.

Day 8 : Bhojwassa - Gangotri (Trek 4-5 hrs) – Uttarkashi (95 kms/4 hrs)

Following breakfast, hike down to Gangotri and then proceed by car to Uttarkashi. Upon arrival, complete the check-in process at the hotel. Spend the night at the hotel.

Day 9 : Uttarkashi - Haridwar – Delhi

In the morning, following breakfast, travel to Haridwar and from there; board the AC Train for Delhi at 18:05 hrs. Arrive in Delhi by 22:45 hrs.
