The challenging mountain path on the icy river beneath the winter sky passes through valleys, mountain caves, and frozen waterfalls. It is one of the most difficult treks in the Indian Himalayas as hikers will encounter rocky terrain and sub-zero temperatures, a rare weather condition that can be challenging to endure.
The Frozen River Trek is not only one of the popular winter treks but also one of the longest trails in the Indian Himalayan region, spanning 90 kilometers over 8 chilly days. Like a journey to paradise, many trekkers have dreamed of experiencing it and have made it part of their travel plans. The adventure begins from Ladakh and takes you to snow-covered villages in Zanskar Valley. One may wonder with curious eyes, questioning what drives someone to explore this barren beauty? Frozen River Chadar Trekking Tour Highlights

• This is a genuine adventure, with only a few groups undertaking the trek each year. The conditions on the river can be unpredictable, so a flexible approach is necessary!

• Embark on a sightseeing excursion to discover the Gompas and forts around Leh as you allow your body to adjust to the altitude.

Best Time to Do Frozen River Trek

January to February : This is the period when the surface of the Zanskar River solidifies. The river appears to be a layer of ice; therefore, it is known in the local dialect as ‘Chadar’.

Where is the Frozen River?

In the winter months, the Zanskar River transforms into a frozen expanse, providing trekkers with an ideal surface for trekking. The path to the Zanskar valley will be demanding yet thrilling as the ice formations resemble sheer cliffs that rise up to 600 m in height, while the Zanskar river itself is narrow, spanning approximately 5 m across. In bygone eras, this route served as a customary trade pathway

Itinerary

Day 1 : Delhi – Leh (Complete Rest in Leh for acclimatisation)

Board an early morning flight to Leh. Upon reaching Leh Airport (Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport), trekkers will be taken to the guest house. Unwind and adjust to the surroundings. Have dinner and spend the night at the Leh guest house.

Day 2 : Leh – Shey – Thiksey - Hemis

Start the day with a hearty breakfast and embark on a monastery tour. Today, trekkers will explore Shey Gompa, Deldan Namgyal, Thiksey Gompa, and Dresthang Gompa. Spend the evening at the comfortable guest house in Leh.

Day 3 : Leh – Chilling (5 hrs drive)

Begin the day with a morning meal and then set off on a journey to Pishu Village, traveling through the stunning roads that are graced with the natural beauty of the surroundings. Have dinner and spend the night at Chilling guest house.

Day 4 : Chilling - Zaribago

After enjoying a satisfying breakfast, commence the initial day of the trek to Zaribago, which is expected to last around five hours. Have dinner and spend the night in a tent at Zaribago.

Day 5 : Zaribago - Deepyokma

The fifth day promises to be thrilling and exhilarating as the hikers will trek across the frozen Zanskar River until they reach Deepyokma. Spend the night and have dinner at the camp in Deepyokma.

Day 6 : Deepyokma - Nyarakpulu

Arrive at Nyarakpulu, located beneath the Nyarak village, by trekking for approximately 4 to 5 hours from Deepyokma. Spend the night at the campsite.

Day 7 : Nyarakpulu - Lingshed

Depart from Nyarakpulu and walk for one hour to reach the quaint village of Lingshed. Enjoy the cozy and pleasant ambiance of a private residence with central heating.

Day 8 : Lingshed

Get ready for an enjoyable day of the Frozen River Chadar Trek. Discover the scenery of Lingshed, tour monasteries, and engage with the local community. Spend the night at Lingshed guest house.

Day 9 : Lingshed - Nyarakpulu

On the ninth day, hikers will trek to Nyarakpulu. Dinner and accommodation for the night will be provided at the Nyarakpulu guest house.

Day 10 : Nyarakpulu - Tso Mopoaldar

Hike for approximately 5 hours from Nyarakpulu to the Tso Mopoaldar campsite.

Day 11 : Tso Mopoaldar - Tilatdo

In the early morning, after breakfast, start a trek to Tilatdo. Dinner and overnight accommodation will be provided in Tilatdo.

Day 12 : Tilatdo - Chilling - Leh

Upon arrival in the morning, begin a trek to Chilling. Continue driving and arrive at the hotel in Leh. Overnight accommodation will be provided at the Leh hotel.

Day 13 : Leh – Delhi

The enchantment and allure of the Zanskar river trek come to a close as trekkers proceed with their onward journey to Delhi.
