Description

One such major religious destination in Uttarakhand is Panch Prayag. Prayag is the name for a confluence of two holy rivers and Uttarakhand houses many such holy rivers. Prayag is considered a holy site and thousands of pilgrims flock to these destinations to perform soul purification rituals and cleanse themselves off their sins. Although we all know about Panch Prayag, there’s another nearby confluence equally mesmerizing – it’s Keshav Prayag – together combined they are called Six Prayag Yatra.
Devprayag – The sacred site where river Alaknanda meets river Bhagirathi.
Rudraprayag – The sacred site where river Alaknanda meets river Mandakini.
Karnaprayag – The sacred site where river Alaknanda meets river Pinder.
Nandprayag – The sacred site where river Alaknanda meets river Nandakini.
Vishnuprayag – The sacred site where the river Alaknanda meets the Dhauli Ganga River.
Keshav Prayag – The holy site where the River Saraswati joins River Alaknanda.

According to legend, as the Ganga descended to Earth, Lord Shiva contained and controlled its enormous flow by dividing it into various streams. After passing through Panch Prayag, the Ganges River becomes complete and flows down, cleansing human sins.

These Prayags are not only religious shrines but also a testament to the beauty of Mother Nature. Nestled in the lap of Himalayas, these religious sites are among some of the most pristine natural locations in Uttarakhand. At the confluence sites, flowing streams collide with each other, creating a thunderous roar that is truly remarkable. Pilgrims from all over India worship at these Prayags.

In addition to these 6 Prayags, Uttarakhand is also home to one of Hinduism’s holiest sites: Badrinath. Badrinath town is renowned for its temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is part of Char Dham Yatra. Devotees climb up the mountain every year to pay their respects before Lord Vishnu.
